In Paris it's the Eiffel Tower, in Moscow it's Saint Basil's Cathedral. Rome has its Parthenon, Athens' it's Acropolis, and in Baku the distinguishable landmark is none other than the Maiden Tower. Originally the Maiden Tower was on the shore of the Caspian Sea. It was constructed in the 12th Century or possibly earlier, and estimates for its age go back to an unlikely 2,500 years. Azerbaijani's are incredibly proud of this monument that is surrounded in mystery and legend.
Many legends surround the Maiden Tower. According to one of the most popular legends, it was a king himself, the girl's father, who fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. But the girl tried to delay her father’s advances by begging him to build the tower and wait until it was completed. When he had completed it, he still had not changed his mind. That's when she leaped into the sea. So it was the unhappy ending of the girl's life. She didn't really know what to do with herself or with her father. She should have killed her father too, but she chose herself. Maybe she was waiting for the prince to come and save her but who knows? It was the uncompleated life, uncompleated happiness and uncompleated legedery.
